Mauri's Wizards
John Braben’s (trumpet) roots are firmly established in the hot Jazz of the 1920s and 30s. One of the hottest players in Qld and well beyond. Geoff Speed is a lyrical and inventive reeds player. Equally at home on the whole saxophone family, his main instrument in this band is clarinet. Tom Nicholson (trombone, vocals) plays regularly with the Caxton Street Jazz Band. He also plays banjo and his other musical pursuits include a 4 piece roving Jazz band called the MetroGnomes and a one man band. Jo Bloomfield is arguably Brisbane’s best pianist in the genre. Her solos have a delightful simplicity which is reminiscent of the Teddy Wilson style. Jo’s boogie renditions are a joy to behold. Wally Furst (guitar, banjo) is one of the great rhythm section players. He hails from southern Qld. Dr Peter Freeman (db bass) from Brisbane. His doctorate is in music and his day job is at the University of Qld. He’s the consummate time keeper with a great feel for each individual song. Mauri is President of Bellingen Jazz Society, President of Bellingen Music Association Inc. and Music Director of Bellingen Jazz Festival Inc. The skills of a band leader often lie in the ability to surround oneself with great musicians. This certainly is the case with this band.
