Brett and the Knighthawks
Brett’s Knighthawks are Brett Iggulden (cornet, sax, vocals), Geoff Speed (clarinet, soprano and alto sax), Paul Bulanyi (guitar), Odile Lejus (db bass) and Mauri Thomas (drums). Geoff is one the great clarinet players, locally and all around. Paul is an incredibly talented and versatile guitarist. In this band his acoustic guitar sound is reminiscent of the gypsy swing style of Django Reinhardt. Odile (bass) and Mauri (drums) provide the essential driving rhythm for this style of Jazz. You can catch these players in various bands over the weekend. The SWING SISTERS are Michele Balharry, Natalie Cowling and Opal Pastro. This vocal Trio evolved from the prestigious Bellingen Big Band. Teaming up with The Knighthawks provided additional scope for expanding their repertoire. It now includes material from the famous Boswell Sisters. The vocal harmonies are often intricate, always good fun and never fail to swing.
There is just one opportunity to catch The Swing Sisters with The Knighthawks at the 2009 Festival. That’s at 12 noon on Friday at the Golf Club. But you can also hear the girls on Friday night with The Bellingen Big Band at the Memorial Hall.
