The Jugalug String Band

String Bands were all the rage in the 1920s and 30s, particularly in rural areas where stringed instruments were popular and more affordable than brass instruments. Their style of music ranged from polkas and waltzes to jazz, blues and novelty music. Instruments were often cheap home-made or found and included kazoos, harmonicas, washboards & washtub basses. A jug was used as a bass instrument – hence the name ‘jug band’ . They performed on street corners, in dance halls, bars, jook joints and at parties. Making up the Jugalug Stringband are Phil Donnison on National ukulele, National guitar, National steel guitar, kazoo, nose flute and vocals; Stewart Binsted on tenor banjo, National guitar, ukulele and jug; Marcus Holden on violin, strohviol, mandolin, National tenor guitar, and the musical saw; Adam Barnard on washboard and traps and Cazzbo Johns on tuba, jug and Swannee whistle.

What an amazing array of instruments! This is superb entertainment, loads of fun and wonderful music.
