Allan Browne's Allfrey Street Band featuring Margie Lou Dyer
“rootsy, bluesy, new orleansy and quirky”
Allan Browne is arguably one of Australia’s best Traditional Jazz drummers and his original music is as fresh as if it was written in 1920 or thereabouts.
All from Melbourne: Paul Williamson (clarinet ,tenor ) John Scurry (guitar), Howard Cairns (bass), Allan (drums, voice) and featured vocalist, Margie Lou Dyer, also on piano.
Most of the repertoire dates from the 1920s and New Orleans, whilst the originals pay homage to the stylistic variation that make Jazz, past and present, an ever-evolving art form. Elements of gospel, blues and New Orleans/Creole flavours are embraced as if new again, yet their traditional forms basically remain intact.
They’ll be on Friday night and twice on Saturday. Be sure to catch them then as playing commitments in Melbourne mean they won’t be playing here on the Sunday.
This is exceptional Traditional Jazz - played today!
