Paul Bulanyi's Manouche Partie

Last year, during the rained-out Sunday afternoon, this group delivered an impromptu smorgasbord of ‘Jazz Manouche’ at Diggers Tavern to a warm and appreciative audience that seemed to love this fresh and vibrant style.

Gypsy Swing is also commonly referred to as ‘Django’s music’. Django Reinhardt was a Manouche gypsy as well as a musical genius, and is still regarded as the greatest jazz musician to come out of Europe.

Drawn together by a love of this style, and the charm of the Parisian culture it reflects, Manouche Partie also pays homage to the classic recording by accordionist Jo Privat, featuring guitarist Pierre 'Baro' Ferret.  This is a celebration of Django's contribution, and also retains a strong link with the exciting waltzes from the Bal Musette era.

Paul Bulanyi (guitar) leads the ensemble and will be featured in the Bulanyi Trio with brother Tibor Bulanyi (rhythm guitar) and Andy Ross (double bass).

Paris Dreaming and Duo Sud are both guitar/accordion duo’s that hail from Brisbane and Melbourne respectively, and while Ewan MacKenzie (guitar), Kay Sullivan (accordion), Andy Ross (guitar) and Jo Abbott (accordion) will be performing as Manouche Partie, they will also present their own programs during the course of the festival.

Nigel Date (guitar) is no stranger to the Bellingen Jazz Festival, and this year he brings virtuoso violinist Daniel Weltlinger from Sydney. They will be featured in the closing Manouche Partie session on Sunday afternoon.

Francis Diaschenko (guitar) and Markus Karlsen (double bass) from Darwin are the backbone of ‘France is Burning’. Their energetic approach to ‘Jazz Manouche’ was a highlight of the Bellingen Flamenco Festival 07.
